Your Applicant details for the Will

The Applicant (also called the Will-maker or testator) is the person making the Will. This guide explains the details we collect and why, so your Will is valid, clear, and easy for your executors to use. It’s written in plain language for New Zealand families.

What details do we collect?

We collect the basics needed to identify you and prepare your Will correctly:

  • Full legal name (as shown on ID).
  • Residential address in New Zealand (via AddressFinder or manual entry).
  • Date of birth (to confirm identity and age).
  • Email (for copies/updates) and phone (optional).
  • Occupation (optional β€” can help clarify identity).
Who is the β€œApplicant”?
  • The person making the Will (you).
  • Sometimes called the testator in legal documents.
  • Your details must be accurate and up-to-date to avoid confusion later.
How do I enter my details correctly?
  • Use your full legal name (include middle names if they’re on your ID).
  • Enter your NZ residential address. If AddressFinder can’t find it, use the manual fields.
  • Enter your DOB using the day/month/year boxes β€” we store it as YYYY-MM-DD.
  • Provide a current email so we can send you a copy and updates; phone is optional.
Common mistakes to avoid
  • Using a nickname instead of your legal name.
  • Providing a mailing address instead of your residential address.
  • Entering a partial or incorrect date of birth.
  • Skipping contact details (makes follow-up harder if something needs clarification).
Quick Questions
  • Do I need my middle names? Yes, if they appear on your ID.
  • Can I change my details later? Yes β€” a new will replaces the old one.
  • What if I live overseas? You can still complete this step; use your NZ address if applicable or provide your current residential address.
