Your Applicant FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions about Applicant Details (NZ)

The Applicant (also called the Will-maker or testator) is the person making the Will. These NZ-specific FAQs explain what details we collect and why, so your Will is clear and usable for your executors. For step-by-step guidance, see the Applicant Help Guide.

Your full legal name (as on ID), NZ residential address, date of birth, and a contact email. Phone and occupation help with identification but are optional unless we say otherwise on the form.

Use your full legal name exactly as on your official ID (include middle names, macrons/diacritics, and hyphens). Your signing name should match the name printed in the Will to avoid doubt later.

Enter your current legal name. If you’ve changed your name (e.g., by marriage or deed poll), use the new legal name. If you commonly use a different name, you may note “also known as …” in your wishes or notes if helpful for identification.

It helps confirm identity and jurisdiction and is used by executors and the Court when required. Use your residential address (not a PO Box). If AddressFinder can’t locate it, use the manual fields and include the 4-digit postcode.

Use your current physical address (temporary accommodation is fine). If overseas, enter your current overseas residential address; the Will can still be executed under NZ law if you sign and witness in accordance with NZ requirements when you sign in NZ.

It confirms you meet the general age requirement and helps distinguish you from people with similar names. We store it in ISO format (YYYY-MM-DD) to avoid confusion between day and month formats.

It’s optional but useful for quick clarification during drafting and for your executors if they need to confirm details later. If omitted, make sure your email is accurate and monitored.

It’s optional but can help verify identity where names are common. If you’re not employed, use a simple descriptor (e.g., “student”, “retired”, “homemaker”).

Enter your name exactly as it appears on your ID (including macrons and diacritics). Consistency reduces the chance of identification issues later.

We recommend a personal email you control long-term. Work emails can change when you change jobs, which can make future updates harder for you or your executors.

Update the Applicant details in the app and regenerate the Will before signing. After signing, you’ll need a new will or a properly executed codicil to change details that appear inside the Will document itself.

No — not for creating a will. Executors may later deal with IRD for estate tax administration, but IRD numbers aren’t needed at drafting time for most users.

We handle personal information in line with NZ privacy principles (collection for a clear purpose, secure storage, access/correction rights). Keep your login secure and tell us if you suspect unauthorised access.

Yes — executors typically receive the Will and need your identifiers and contact details to apply for probate and liaise with banks and agencies if required.

Yes. Enter your current residential address overseas. If you intend the Will to be governed by NZ law, ensure signing and witnessing comply with NZ formalities when you sign in NZ, or seek legal advice about recognition in your location.

Use the manual fields and include suburb/town and the 4-digit NZ postcode if applicable. We’ll still store the hidden normalised fields your executors can rely on for service and probate paperwork.

If they appear on your official ID, yes — include them. It reduces the risk of confusion with someone who shares your first/last name.
